Description:
Create colorful pieces of jewelry by learning the ancient art of enameling.
Enameling is the technique of fusing powdered glass to metal under high heat conditions. This class will introduce you to the basic kiln and torch firing methods, from preparing the enamels to experimenting with colors to achieve rich vibrant patterned surfaces. Also learn basic techniques such as Sgraffito (drawing in the enamel), stenciling, and adding elements such as beads and glass threads.
Basic metal skills are helpful but all levels are welcome. Please do not wear loose clothing or jewelry to class, tie back long hair & wear sneakers. A supply kit is available to purchase on the first day.
Please note this is a 6 week class.
Biography:Cathy Darlington is a mixed media jewelry artist who currently enjoys teaching jewelry and sewing at the Wayne Art Center along with exhibiting and selling work locally. Over the past 20 years, Cathy taught at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Chicago, specializing in fashion illustration, portfolio development, beaded and metal jewelry. She also taught design and art education classes at Columbia College, Chicago. She is a firm believer in education and holds several degrees: a Bachelor of Arts: emphasis illustration and jewelry from Loyola University, Chicago, a Bachelor of Arts: Secondary Education, from Concordia University, Chicago, a Master of Arts: Interdisciplinary Arts, from Columbia College, Chicago, and is pursuing an Associates in Fashion Design; from IADT, Chicago. She has been recognized for her jewelry work by being awarded The Albert P. Weisman Memorial Scholarship Fund, Columbia College, and has jewelry in the Artist Book Permanent Collection, at The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois.
