Understanding the Portrait
with Alexander Shanks
A six (6) session course
No class on 5/25
Tuition includes model fee.
Working from a live model, this class will give you a clearer understanding of the process required to create a strong portrait. Demonstrations will provide insight into necessary simplifications of complex problems. Students will learn to capture likeness and improve techniques.
Supply List:
- Palette (Preferably 16” x 20” wooden palette)
- 9”x12” cotton canvases. 16” x 20” is also acceptable. (Toned to a middle value grey with ‘Goldens’ acrylic N6 neutral gray tone)
- Oil paints (Preferably Windsor Newton Brand):
Burnt Sienna
Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Red
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Red
Indian Yellow
Viridian
French ultramarine Blue
Titanium White
- Nitrile or vinyl gloves to protect your hands
- Viva paper towels or cotton rags
- Glass jar or Silicoil tank jar (for solvent)
- Mineral Spirits, Sunny side, Gamsol, or similar brand
- Bulldog clips (if needed to secure canvas or palette to surface)
- Brushes: Silver Brush Brand (Or other brands of varying size)
