Description

An Introduction to Making and Formulating Your Own Glazes
w/Jerry Bennett
Tuesdays, January 16 - April 9
A twelve (12) session course
This is an introductory class; all skill levels are welcome.

This Introduction to Glazes is an introductory class in formulating, making, and using glazes for your work. Why make/formulate your glazes? Using other people’s recipes for your glazing runs contrary to your best needs as an artist; control of your materials and the look-identity of your work. Other advantages include cost, fit, and durability of the ware and the uniqueness and beauty of your glazes. We will focus on developing glazes free of defects and teach you how to correct those that occur, such as crazing. The goal of this class is to improve your glazing!
The class will be comprised of a variety of teaching methods. Each class will begin with a discussion of glazes, glazing materials, testing techniques, and a computerized glaze calculation program. We will work on glazes together in the early classes and develop a “Base” clear and matte glaze at cone 6. From these base glazes, each student will then, with oversight, and review from the instructor, develop variations and personal glazes. Students will be expected to keep a journal containing printed handouts from the instructor and extensive notes about the lectures and glaze tests they conduct.
This class will be conducted in the glaze room. Please bring an M95 DUST MASK.

Because of the ceramic materials, we will be using, there will be a $50 Materials fee included in the tuition. This class does not come with a bag of clay or a shelf.
