Description
Figure & Portrait Drawing
w/Ernie Norcia
A seven (7) session course
The convincing depiction of form in three-dimensional space is one of the great conceptual breakthroughs in Western art. In this class, our main focus will be on the study of form in a spatial context, and, we will use observational approaches in the construction of our images. Figure drawing for Beginners will begin by drawing the figure on toned paper. Our drawing tools will be charcoal and white chalk. We will explore physical viewpoint, effective composition and effective rendering of light and shadow to shape our expression and create a unified pictorial image. The goal is to encourage a sensitive approach to handling a wide range of values, in tandem with a variety of lines and edges to build a drawing vocabulary that communicates a class members visual ideas and ideals. The class will include demonstrations, discussions of masterworks, both traditional and contemporary, and thoughtful feedback on work. The drawing course will be a valuable resource for students of any age and skill level.
Traditional drawing materials will be used

Toned paper: Strathmore 400 series, 11” X 14” drawing pad, toned gray or tan 24 sheet pad
mixed toned papers: Canson Mi Teintes, 12” X 16”, gray tone, or earth tone, 24 sheet pad
