Alla Prima Portraits w/Annie Thompson

This 12-week course is for beginner to mid-level students who want to explore portrait painting. This course will be split between working from a clothed live model to working with mirrors to create self-portraits. Studying and referencing both clothed live models, master copies, and self-portraits from life, students will be encouraged to use the human head as a painting motif, utilizing learned traditional painting techniques to consider the mood, tone, and personality possibilities that self-portraiture offers. In addition, the instructor will introduce a variety of artists who are representative of the lessons provided and conduct in-process and final critiques for a helpful synopsis of the student’s progress and ideas.

- 12x16” painting canvas panel or canvas pad (or preferred painting supports)

- Palette knife (metal preferred)

- Palette paper pad (or preferred palette)

- Linseed oil

- Turponoid or Gamsol

- Airtight Brush Washer can or small jar with screwable lid

- Bar soap or bottle of dish soap for cleaning brushes

- Brushes of preference (I prefer synthetic hair for softer application. A variety in sizes of Filbert and Round brushes would be great. A larger flat brush would also be good for more experienced painters.)

- Oil paints (Utrecht, Winsor-Newton, and Gamblin are great student-grade brands that are economical)

- Titanium White

- Burnt Umber

- Raw Sienna

- Yellow Ochre

- Cadmium Red Medium

- French Ultramarine Blue

- Alizarin Crimson

- Additional Oil Paint Colors for an advanced palette

- Cerulean Blue

- Cadmium Yellow Medium

- Viridian Green

- Cadmium Orange Medium

- Dioxazine purple

- Lemon Yellow

- Permanent Magenta
