Description

Purpose: Provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.
Prerequisites: 15 years of age or older and successfully complete eligibility prerequisites: 1) Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards/meters continuously, tread water at the surface for 2 minutes, and then swim 50 more yards/meters. While swimming, you must keep your face in the water and demonstrate good breath control. You may swim using front crawl, breaststroke, or any combination of both. Swim goggles are permitted during this portion. While treading, you may only use your legs.
2) Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards/meters. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards/meters on your back to return the the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted. Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.

Recreation Center Memberships or day pass required for duration of class. Class Setting: Online, Classroom and Pool

Note: Course requires participants to have access to internet for online component. The online component is approximately 7 hours outside of the scheduled class time. Certification Requirements: Attend and participate in all class sessions, successfully complete online portion, demonstrate competency in all required skills, activities and final skill scenarios and correctly answer at least 80% of questions on the final written exams.

Certification: Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years.
