This lifeguard class is offered for FREE to aid in lifeguard recruitment for our facility. No commitment required to enroll, but please consider applying for employment.
The Seattle Parks and Recreation teaches American Red Cross Lifeguard Training courses. This American Red Cross course is your first step in becoming a lifeguard for the City of Seattle. The purpose of the Lifeguard Training Course is to train, educate and test an individuals ability to be a professional lifeguard.
The Blended Learning course is approximately 20.5 hours in length at the pool facility and 7.5 hours of e-Learning online. Course includes Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR/AED for the lifeguard certifications valid for 2 years. Course is taught in combination with online learning. Students will receive a letter and a link for access to the American Red Cross online classroom to e-mail provided in user account. This link gives participants access to this classroom for the entire course and will include animated learning of material and videos of what will be practiced at the pool. This benefit allows students to go back and do the lessons more than once anytime during the course if they need more time to learn the material. The entire eLearning is the responsibility of the student; class time is for hands on skills. Students must attend all sessions of the in-class sessions as no makeup days are scheduled.
When you successfully complete the Lifeguard Training course, you will be certified in Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard. Lifeguarding and First Aid Certifications are valid for two years. CPR/AED for the Lifeguard is valid for two years.
Candidates must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course.
Candidates must swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
Candidates must tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
Candidates must complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds with a 10 pound weight. Goggles may not be used.
