This introduction to papermaking will allow participants to create and take home sheets of paper with prepared pulp made from a variety of natural and recycled materials including plant fiber, denim/cotton, and objects collected from the Santa Monica beach.
Grace Hwang is a multidisciplinary artist and educator whose movement practice is fueled by improvising new forms through ensemble work and rule-based play. Often working with artists of different disciplines, she is deeply invested in the relationship between agency and collectivity in collaboration. She is developing a performance with collaborator Heisue Chung-Matheu that reflects upon the 1992 Los Angeles Riot/Uprising through memory, archive and the act of memorializing. It will be presented at Highways Performance Space in February 2017. She will utilize her residency at Camera Obscura Art Lab as a hybrid art and dance studio to research and generate material and props for the production. Participants and visitors are invited to a series of papermaking and movement workshops and partake in the final performance event in April.
Camera Obscura Art Lab at 1450 Ocean offers arts, crafts and culture classes year-round. Polish your writing, take a better picture, learn how to make paper, knit, sew, and find a community of artists and movers!
