Calling all BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) who want to go kayaking!
Join us for an evening on Pickerel Lake in kayaks. This experience is open to all, but designed for beginners who have little to no kayaking experience and want to learn.
Pickerel Lake at Lilydale Regional Park 950 Lilydale Road, Saint Paul, MN, 55118
Pre-registration is required to ensure we have enough kayaks and life jackets for participants and to comply with CDC guidelines re: COVID-19 and social distancing.
If you sign up for this kayaking event, please:
- Be sure you can get to the park (unfortunately, public transportation isn't nearby).
- Make sure you will attend. We have a limited amount of kayaks and we want to make sure that the folks that sign up will show up.
This kayaking trip is led by People of Color, and is specifically for Black, Indigenous and People of Color. No kids or pets. Please bring a face mask, shoes you can get wet, and a water bottle. If you have your own life jacket, please bring it. We will provide hand sanitizer and bug spray. Please be mindful to allow at least 6ft physical distance from one another.
Accessibility Notes: There is some equipment that will help make a kayak more accessible. If you have physical limitations, let us know ASAP so we can make sure we have the correct equipment for you. The water fountain at the park is shut off for the season, so bringing your own water is encouraged. There is a satellite toilet (which is single stall and would not accommodate a wheelchair). If you need wheelchair access to a restroom, email asha.shoffner@ci.stpaul.mn.us ASAP. If severe weather is predicted, we may cancel up to 2 hours before the event starts. If it is raining but is not severe, we will kayak in light rain.
Please note that if you have not yet created a profile in our online registration system, you will need to do so to register for this (or any) class/workshop/hike that we do. When creating a profile, the system asks you to select one of two gender options. We recognize that gender is on a spectrum and apologize if your gender identity is not listed as an option. You may choose the one that most aligns with your identity, or you can skip the question altogether.
To create a safe space for all, we will start our paddling event with introductions – including the opportunity to share your pronoun. Please contact asha.shoffner@ci.stpaul.mn.us with any questions.
