
Speak Up Contest (Turncoat Debate) Ages 14-18

Description
The speak up contests are designed to help youth develop skills, confidence, and poise in speaking to groups. Additionally, public speaking will help teach participants how to organize thoughts and express ideas and reward and recognize participants for accomplishments they have made in a friendly and competitive atmosphere.
The top ten contestants from each category will be selected to participate in the main event (finals) on April 23rd.
Group categories are as follows:
Group D (Ages 14-18)
Turncoat is a form of debate where the speaker literally debates against oneself. The speaker starts by taking a stance on the topic and switches sides after a specific duration of time.
Turncoat Debate rules and regulations:
1. Topics: The topics will be given on the spot
2. Preparation time: 30 minutes after topic is given.
3. Speaking time: Each speaker will have to speak for 2 min 30 seconds on the given topic. The initial will be given to the speaker along with the topic. The order or changing sides is as follows:
A. 1 minute - For
B. 1 minute - Against
C. 30 seconds - Summary
Judging Criteria:
- 40% Content
- 20% Physical presence - Eye contact, body language and poise.
- 20% Voice and articulation - Volume, pace, rhythm, intonation and proper pronunciation.
- 20% Language - Appropriateness and accurate use of language.
