Description

Shame and Body Image

Course Description:
Many people believe that how they look makes them feel ashamed. In fact, negative feelings about our bodies are often fueled by pre-existing toxic shame which can actually create eating disorders. This course will distinguish toxic versus healthy aspects of shame and guilt. It will explore the roots of shame arising from primary relationships in preschool years, as well as relationships with peers during school age and young adulthood.

This course will discuss techniques for reducing shame and increasing healthy pride around clients’ views of their own bodies. It will explore the process of clients learning to identify triggers for shame scripts and create new self-talk. Participants will learn to use their current treatment style to transform clients’ negative body images into positive, life-affirming views of themselves

Course Objectives:
  • Participants will be able to distinguish between healthy versus toxic guilt and shame.
  • Participants will understand the developmental roots of shame and the creation of shame scripts.
  • Participants will learn tools to help clients identify triggers that activate their shame scripts.
  • Participants will learn to identify and acknowledge clients’ sources of pride.
