Alphabet Soup: Decoding the Letters and Lingo Used in Schools to Support Students

Course Description:

This course is designed to break down the jargon that is often used in educational settings while providing support to students. Often, acronyms and phrases are thrown around in meetings or other settings, leaving new staff, parent/guardians, community members, and advocates confused and frustrated. This introduction to acronyms and phrases commonly used in educational settings will highlight the history and definitions of these terms as well as provide scenarios for their usage and practical applications of best practices to support students who may need additional accommodations or modifications to their environment and/or curriculum to meet their needs.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Identify and define commonly used acronyms in educational settings, sufficient for the individual to possess a basic level of understanding when presented with them in formal educational meetings, conferences with clients, during advocacy work, etc.
  • Summarize the evolution of social work in educational settings and discuss how various acronyms (i.e. accommodations and/or modifications, therapies, etc.) can be used to assist students and families
