Training Description
Through the lens of Bowen Family Systems Theory, this presentation will discuss how conflicts arise and escalate in family and other systems. This presentation will address the need to shift from the content of the conflict to a focus on the underlying emotional process which generates the conflict. Along with this focus, the concept of family emotional balance will be explored, i.e., how families and other systems organize themselves in ways in which anxiety — and the tension between fusion and autonomy of its members — is managed. The fundamental concepts of the theory will be presented. Implications for clinical praxis will be part of this focus. This training is appropriate for those new as well as those with previous exposure to the theory.

Training Objectives:
  1. Participants will be able to articulate the fundamental concept of emotional process, along with the basic concepts of Bowen Family Systems Theory.
  2. Participants will be able to identify the relevance of shifting from content of conflict within a system to the underlying emotional process.
  3. Participants will be able to incorporate these concepts into clinical work, as well as other systems, including one’s own family of origin.
  4. Participants will be able to recognize the significance of shifting from a theoretical framework based on individualistic thinking to a systems-based paradigm.
