Description
Join us for an educational hands-on experience as we learn about proper backpacking techniques including how to prepare, pack, and fir our packs. We will embark on a short ranger-led hike with our gear to practice our newly acquired backpacking skills. Please bring your pack and any camping gear that you would expect to bring on your backpacking trip. If you do not have any gear, you are still welcome to come and learn about some of the things you need for backcountry backpacking.
We will begin at the South Mountain Visitor's Center and hike for 2-3 miles along Las Lomitas Trail. Along the way, we will learn how to safely backpack on trail with tips and tricks! Bring your hiking poles if you have them to get some practice in.
Fitness Level: Moderate
It is recommended to bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and sturdy close toed shoes. If you are bringing your pack. fill up your water bladder to simulate a full pack.
We will meet at The South Mountain Visitor Conference center Room (10409 S. Central Ave, Phoenix, A 85042) where we will spend our time reviewing backcountry camping preparations and techniques and depart on the hike by 10AM; please arrive a few minutes early for check in and fill out the activity waiver.
Parking is limited, please park in the Activity Complex Parking area.

All participants must register. Any participants under 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Parent/guardian must remain with their child for the entirety of the program.
The trails are uneven and would not be sustainable for strollers.
No pets, please.
