Description
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course prepares students for certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, and First Aid. Students must be 15 years old by the final day of the course and pass a pre-screen test (300 yard continuous swim and rhythmic breathing using front crawl or breast stroke, 10lb brick retrieval within one minute forty seconds and tread water using legs only for two minutes) on the first day of in-water session. If the student does not pass the pre-screen, a course fee refund, minus $15 admin fee will be issued.
Once the course has been successfully completed the student will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Successful course completion requires completion of online learning component by May 1, 100% participation in classroom and skill sessions, as well as successful performance in skill knowledge evaluations.

Due to the nature of the skills in this course, you will be participating in strenuous activities, such as performing CPR on the floor and removing someone from the water. If you have a medical condition or disability or if you have any questions about your ability to participate fully in this course, discuss this class with your physician and email ppadilla@mvf.org to inform the instructor before you start the course.
Covid-19 Precautions for Lifeguard Training and Participation
It is suggested that all participants do a wellness and temperature check before beginning their training session.
- Participants should take their own temperature AT HOME before coming to the class. If, temperature is 100 degrees or greater, email your instructor and do not come to training.
- Ask yourself the following questions. If the answer is "Yes" to any of the questions, notify your instructor and do not come to training.
- Have you developed:
- Do you have a fever (100 Fahrenheit or greater) or feeling of a fever?
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat
- Chills or repeated shaking with chills
- Muscle pain
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
- Have you, or anyone you have been in close contact with been diagnosed with COVID-19 or have been placed on quarantine for possible contact with COVID-19
- Note, that every Marylander who is returning from out-of-state or any out-of-state traveler should get tested and self-quarantine at home until the test result is received. - The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, between people who are in prolonged close contact. Close contact is defined as being within 6 feet of infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period*starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection until the time the patient is isolated).
- As a response, during all times when we are in a classroom based instruction setting, all participants will be required to wear face covering to protect your health, the health of other participants and health of staff.
- MOST face coverings are not designed for safe in-water use so this step will not be able to be utilized when practicing in-water skills.
- Note that in order to meet certification requirements for Lifeguard Training there will be close contact between participants during certain skills practiced. By registering and attending the class, the participant and their parent/guardian acknowledges and fully assumes this risk.
- Safety measures and guidelines must be followed by all participants and will be enforced by staff and instructors.
*COVID-19
An inherent risk of exposer to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Senior citizens and people with underlying medical conditions are especially vulnerable. Safety measures and guidelines must be followed by all participants and will be enforced by MVF staff. All participants must wear facial covering over the nose and mouth except when in the water and maintain a 6-ft distance from one another when practicable. There will be situations such as in-water rescues or first aid/victim care where distancing 6 ft from on another will not be possible. Please consider this when deciding to participate in the class. By registering for this class and participating in the class you voluntarily assume all risks related to the exposure to COVID-19.
