Description
Lapidary is the art of cutting, polishing or engraving stones. See how you can take a rough rock such as an agate or jasper and turn it into a work of art suitable for incorporating into jewelry. Designed for the beginner and a great complement to jewelry making. Learn safety and the basic skill techniques to saw, grind, sand, and polish many different types of rock into cabochons. A cabochon is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted. The resulting form is usually a convex top with a flat bottom. Successful completion of the course results in certification to utilize the lab during open shop periods. Additional supply cost depends on project(s) and includes some personal protection gear. Meets at the Madison Gem & Mineral Club facility near Rimrock Rd. and the W. Beltline. Presented in cooperation with the Madison Gem & Mineral Club. 6 Meetings. Meets at Meets at the Madison Gem & Mineral Club facility. To get to the facility take the fist left off Rimrock Road south of the Beltline, by Badger Bowl. Turn left on Nob Hill Rd. and follow the street around the corner so you are driving parallel to the Beltline. The facility is located in the free standing tan building just past Harker Heating. Turn in the driveway for Harker Heating (just before Holmes Tire), the building will be on your left - look for the doorway that says MG&MC Lapidary ****** DO NOT wear overly loose clothing, hanging hair or jewelry that might get caught in the moving parts of the machinery you will be learning to use ****** Safety glasses, hearing protection, aprons and some materials available for sale at class or you can purchase your own. Burnie's Rock Shop on E. Johnson St. is a good source. ****** Access to lab outside of class available for $7.00/4hr period ($5.00/4hr for Madison Gem & Mineral Club members).
