Description

The Re-Birth of the Barrens | The first government surveyors and early European-American settlers of our area reported a landscape of prairies, marshes, sloughs, scattering timber, barrens, and oak openings vegetation. Far different from the eastern deciduous forests of the same time period, these new "barrens" featured only scattered and often smaller trees and an abundance of grasses, sedges, and wildflowers between. Fast forward to the 1980s and ecological restorationists are pushing prairie fires and invasive brush removal into the edges of the oak woods and "rediscovering" a lost flora. Did we actually forget the barrens? How could we? Join us to try to answer these and other questions while we work together to restore an acre of former oak barrens. Work activities will include planting oak and hazel nut seedlings and then scattering the seed of native flowers and grasses. Camping at Glacial Park is free with this event only, so come and be part of an award-winning program of recreation, learning and doing - a vacation that makes a difference. There are also several motel options within 15 minutes of the park. Includes a snack Friday evening, continental breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning, and lunch and dinner on Saturday. To register with a friend (non-family member) and receive a discount or obtain a student discount (student discount will automatically apply to anyone between 16-21 years of age) please register by calling 815-479-5779.
