Description
This in person training and review session is the first step to becoming a District herbicide volunteer, which requires having a pesticide license from the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDA). Anyone can take the test, but only registered volunteers working with a steward or staff may apply herbicide at District sites.
Please bring a lunch and water. Some light refreshments will be provided during this full day event.
Training Session (8:00am-11:45am)
We will review the Illinois Pesticide Applicator Training Manual for General Standards in a classroom setting. There will also be a brief Q&A review session with District staff regarding test topics.
Study materials will be sent to you about a week ahead of time.
Testing Session (12:15pm-4:00pm)
The Illinois Department of Agriculture will administer the 100-question Pesticide General Standards exam and 50-question category exams for Right-of-Way, Forests, and Aquatics. Tests will be graded on-site. A score of 70% or more is required to pass each exam.
Volunteers applying herbicide on District sites are required to obtain the commercial not-for-hire Operator license for General Standards. It is highly recommended to additionally obtain the Applicator license for Right-of-Way.
Bring the following to the testing session:
- Your photo I.D.
- A basic function calculator. (Cell phones may not be used as calculators)
- Your retest letter from the Illinois Department of Agriculture (if renewing license).
- Know your complete Social Security number.
Here's some other important information:
- Testing begins promptly at 12:15pm.
- Each exam is valid for three years if taken the same year as the General Standards exam. Otherwise, all category exams expire concurrent with the General Standards exam regardless of year taken.
- All exams may be taken a maximum of 3 times in a 6-month period.
- All licenses expire on December 31 of the specific year they are scheduled to expire.
Registered District volunteers will be able to sign up early. If spaces are still available, sign-up will be open to the public.
