Lifeguard Class: April 25th-27th

Friday 4-9p Prerequisites & Professionalism of Lifeguard {Lessons 1 + 2}
Saturday 8a-8p Water skills & Escapes {Lessons 3 + 4}
Land-based & Cardiac Emergencies {Lessons 5 + 6}
Sunday 8a-8p Water skills & First Aid {Lessons + 7}
Backboarding & Written/Water exams {Lesson 8}
Attendance is mandatory to all sessions. Locations and end times may vary.
Lunch break will be provided between sessions.

Course Materials:
? Swimsuit & towel
? Lifeguard book (issued on first day of class)
? $$$ for food or cold lunch on Saturday
? Study materials (pencil, highlighter, etc.)

Prerequisite Skills:
1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl breaststroke or a combinatory of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
o Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
o Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve 10 pound object.
o Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water.
o Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Successful Completion:
? Attend every session
? Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities
? Demonstrate competency in the three final skill scenarios
? Correctly answer at least 80% of the questions in the two sections of the final written exam

? CPR/AED for lifeguards (certification good for 2 years)
? Lifeguarding/First Aid (certification good for 2 years)
