Day 3: Workshop 10:00 - 4:00 PM (1 Hour Lunch Break)

Please join us for an immersive two-day workshop with North Carolina potter Michael Kline, exploring the dynamic relationship between surface design and form. Kline will demonstrate his approach to wheel-thrown forms, showcasing his signature techniques for creating expressive, layered surfaces. Using a combination of stamping/inlay, painting, flashing slips, and soda glaze, he will illustrate how surface decoration can enhance and complement the form and function of a pot.

Throughout the workshop, Kline will share insights into his process, from brushwork and mark-making to glazing and atmospheric firing considerations. Participants will engage in simple hands-on activities designed to build confidence in mark-making and surface experimentation. These exercises will encourage spontaneity and play, helping students develop a more intuitive approach to decorating their work.

This workshop is open to potters of all levels eager to explore new ways of integrating form and surface, whether through traditional techniques or personal experimentation.

Attendees should bring a bamboo-type calligraphy brush to paint with (2" width will be best)
