Kiwanis Park, 371 Dynasty Dr.
Archaeology and excavation program, in partnership with Washington County Historical Trust and Little Antietam Creek, Inc. at the Saylor House in Kiwanis Park.
Have you ever wanted to be a participant in a real archaeological excavation program? If so, this season is your chance!
Meet Monday- Friday, July 27-31, from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. to participate in a hands-on archaeology effort at the historic site, the Saylor House, at Kiwanis Park by the Antietam Creek.
This unique exploratory archaeology program will introduce students to the discipline of archaeology through hands-on instruction at a real, on-going archaeological project at the Saylor House in Kiwanis Park in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Participants will work alongside archaeologist, Scott Parker, who will instruct students in all aspects of archaeology from digging and screening to artifact identification and processing, to remote sensing (looking into the ground without digging).
Includes some physical exercise.
Participants may expect excavation and site survey work, including digging of test pits, exploratory work with trowels, some lifting of buckets, and screening of soil for artifacts.
Weather Conditions:
On inclement weather occasions, lab work will be the primary focus. All classes begin at the Saylor House in Kiwanis Park unless notified ahead of time. Registrants will be in contact with instructor upon enrollment. In the event of the Saylor House site being inundated with rain, lab work activities will take place at rain-location: indoors at the Jonathan Hager House Museum in City Park.
