Dip your brush into watercolor. Have fun exploring this rewarding medium online via Zoom. The class offers step-by-step demonstration and guidance through the fundamentals of watercolor: handling color mixing, using washes, dry brush, use of color and composition. We’ll move into new approaches to materials, composition and color. We’ll experiment with pen & ink, charcoal and gesso applications to our paper. The class will feature demonstrations, critique, discussion and projects for student work, all offered in a warm, supportive environment. For beginners and intermediate levels.

Notes
No class Apr 15.

Recommended materials for Watercolor class are:
Roll of paper towels
2 or 3 or more Water Containers
I use re-purposed 35 oz. yogurt containers. The idea is to have plenty of clean water available
when you paint.

Pencils and erasers
Hard lead pencils are best. Kneaded eraser.

Plastic palette
Suggestion is Yasutomo Folding Watercolor palette at Blick with 18 color wells and several
mixing areas. Basically you’ll need a palette to hold 8 or more colors and areas to use for
mixing.

Watercolor Brushes

2 Rounds. #4 and #14. Make sure you have a round brush with a point.
2 Flats. A 1/4” flat and a 3/4” flat

I suggest that you purchase your brushes at Dick Blick in Westbury. Ask one of the staff to help
you pick 4 brushes that fit your budget and feeling for how you would like to be painting.

Watercolor Paper
9” X 12”” Arches 140 lb. Cold Press Paper in a pad. Quality paper in watercolor painting makes
a major difference in achieving satisfactory results.

Watercolor Paint

Windsor Newton professional grade are recommended. Windsor Newton Cotman watercolors
are acceptable. However, the professional grade paints give much better results. Paints in tubes
are highly preferred over paints in hard cakes. All of our projects will utilize the following limited
palette of colors.

Alizarin Crimson
Cadmium Red
Cadmium Yellow ( or Lemon Yellow)
Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Blue
Turquoise Blue
Hookers Green
Sap Green
Paynes Grey
Ivory Black
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber
I suggest shopping a the Dick Blick store in Carle Place. They have helpful staff there.
