Description: This jazz dance class provides basic skills for the performer who is interested in musical theater, as well as students enrolled in Corps or Principal Dance Technique. Students will learn fundamental dance steps and combinations that are seen and done at musical theater auditions and workshops. This class provides the foundation for a student to feel more confident when attending a dance audition for community theater productions. Jazz Dance will also explore the audition process, choreography, and famous dancers and choreographers who influenced and shaped jazz and musical theater. Students are required to wear black jazz shoes in class. In order for students to learn the techniques of dance through specific, individualized instruction, the instructor must be able to see every muscle working. Therefore, all female dancers are to wear jazz pants and a closely fitted top to dance class. Male dancers should wear a T-shirt and black pants they can move in comfortably. No street clothes or jeans are allowed. If a student does not come appropriately dressed for class, the instructor has the option to ask that student to observe and not participate in class. Students are expected to spend 15 minutes per day, four-five days per week reviewing the exercise combinations in order to memorize the pattern of the combinations so class time can be focused on the correct execution of the steps. Once the dance to be performed is learned, students are then expected to practice the dance four-five days per week for 15-30 minutes per day. Students will participate in a dance recital at the end of the year. There will be no dance costume fee.
