Description
Junior Lifeguard - Session 5
This dynamic inclusive program introduces water safety/rescue, First Aid, and CPR in a fun and challenging environment. Each day, participants enjoy a variety of beach and water activities designed to promote fitness, self-esteem, and teamwork. Focus is given to personal safety and awareness of water safety for others. In addition to the extensive core curriculum, a specific theme will be emphasized each session. Children will receive a commemorative pin recognizing their accomplishment at the end of each session. Please pack well-balanced snacks and a hearty lunch. There will be a snack break during the morning and afternoon. The lunch hour will be monitored by instructors. Depending on the program site, lunch items may or may not be available for purchase. Sunscreen application is required throughout the day!
Session 5: Survivor: Junior Lifeguard
Do you have what it takes to survive in the wild, natural disasters, emergency situations, and perhaps a zombie attack? This week focuses on preparedness! JG's will learn how to use radios, fight off sharks, build fires, and making an SOS signal large enough for a helicopter to see. They'll also have several visitors from Emergency Response vocations. Prepare to triage some gnarly injuries! Optional certification in First Aid.
Prerequisites
Participants must pass a 25-yard swim test on the first day of each session. Parents must be present for this swim test. Successful completion of the swim test is mandatory for program participation. Instructors will evaluate swimmers based on their swimming competence and confidence. If a parent has any doubts regarding their child's ability to pass the swim test, a pre-test is highly recommended. Please refer to pre-test procedures included in the registration materials for more detailed information.
Uniform Requirements
As part of the program, junior lifeguards will be provided with a JG t-shirt and rash guard to be worn during the program. Either the shirt or rash guard must always be worn. The junior guards will be responsible for providing and wearing their own swim trunks.
Certification
Junior lifeguards can earn an American Red Cross certificate in First Aid or CPR/AED. Odd numbered sessions (1, 3, 5 and 7) will certify in First Aid. Even numbered sessions (2, 4, and 6) will certify in CPR/AED. This is optional. If interested, parents must pay for the certification at the time of registration. Participants cannot purchase Red Cross certification on site. At the end of the session, those who opt for the certificate will receive a temporary certification. Official certifications from the Red Cross will be processed and mailed at the end of the summer.
