Description
SUNOL - Learn about local plants used for natural dyeing!
Join Sunol staff on a nature hike and stay for a group craft.
Gain hands-on experience identifying and dyeing with a variety of plants.
Arrive by 12pm.
8+yrs
Adult participation required for duration of program
$5 parking fee
Meet at Visitor Center.
Be prepared to walk for about an hour and a half.
Bring water.
Toilets at parking lot and trailhead.
You will learn about the ethnobotany of 10 different dye plants and the rainbow of colors they reveal on cloth.
Afterwards, stay for a group craft and gain hands-on experience dyeing a variety of natural fibers.
12:00pm - Meet at visitor center and set out for our hike; 3 miles
1:30pm - Return to visitor center; take a short food and bathroom break
1:45pm - We will dye cotton bandanas with a native dye plant
3:00pm - Program completion
Recommended materials:
Proper hiking equipment (dress in layers, close toed shoes)
Water
Small fiber or wooden object to dye in the dye vat
All other dye materials will be provided.
*If people have accessibility/mobility concerns, they can opt out of the hike and just participate in the craft.
From Fremont, drive north on I-680 and exit at Calaveras Road (near the town of Sunol.) Turn right at the exit onto Calaveras Road and proceed about four miles to a left turn onto Geary Road, which leads directly into the park. (If you find yourself driving uphill on a narrow winding road you’ve missed the Geary Road turnoff.)
To reach the visitor center take the first left after the park entrance.
From the Oakland-Berkeley area, drive east on I-580 to the junction with I-680. Take I-680 south and exit at Calaveras Road/Highway 84 just south of the Sunol exit. At the bottom of the exit, turn left onto Calaveras Road and proceed as noted above.

Child age range: 8 – 16 YOA
