Description

This beginning class assumes no previous knowledge of metalworking, but any shop experience will be helpful. Class starts with basic safety, fire management, and hammering techniques. Next, you will learn tapering, bending, and shaping while also being introduced to more advanced methods. Finally, you will use these techniques to make your own item, such as a hook or keychain. This class provides a brief but compelling introduction to the blacksmithing world and prepares you for the next level, Intermediate Blacksmithing with Focus on Projects. Information regarding appropriate clothing and protective equipment is detailed in online description under Notes.

Notes
The Blacksmithing Workshop is at McClellan Ranch Preserve 22221 McClellan Road, Cupertino. You will be using a propane forge and working with hot metal during the classes and this will expose you to soot, flames, sparks, and loud noises. For safety you will need dress appropriately for working at the forge by wearing: Leather work boots or other sturdy shoes. Long pants made of cotton (Synthetic materials are not recommended because they can melt when exposed to flame or sparks, and some may burn rapidly. Synthetics will not be allowed when working or in close proximity to the forging area. Cotton shirts with long sleeves are recommended and shirts should be tucked in to reduce the risk of catching on fire when reaching over the forge. ALWAYS wear safety glasses. ANSI approved impact-type safety glasses with side shields or goggles are recommended. We will provide a pair of safety glasses, but you may prefer to bring your own. A leather or cotton apron is optional. Cotton gloves can protect against heat, but are optional. The ring of the anvil can be loud, so hearing protection is advised, but optional during classes. We have ear plugs on hand to use.
