BASIC WOODWIND (CLARINET & SAXOPHONE) REPAIR COURSE
DAVID TUTTLE, INSTRUCTOR
The course objective is to train students in the adjustment and minor repair of woodwind instruments, in particular clarinets and saxophones. The goal over four 2-hour sessions is to obtain the skills with which to deal with routine maintenance and emergency situations. Participants are encouraged to bring student level instruments if available.
SESSION I Basic key adjustment and key cork replacement
SESSION II Replacing pads
SESSION III Tenon & neck corks, Tools of the trade, safety tips, preferred instrument brands, avoiding accidents
SESSION IV Review, survey of other woodwinds and the families from high to low

David Tuttle is an active freelance musician who has performed with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Milwaukee Symphony, the Honolulu Symphony, Ars Viva Chicago, and the Lake Forest Symphony. He has been performing as an extra player with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1974. David currently serves as principal clarinetist in the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, Light Opera Works, and the Southern Illinois Music Festival, for which he is also personnel manager. He is the founder and director of Chicago Winds, Inc., which has presented more than 2,000 program in Chicago Public Schools. David Tuttle has repaired woodwind instruments for Total Music in Glenview for over 20 years. In this role he has serviced Glenview public schools performing in school repairs on a weekly basis.
