Description

Go WILD for Spring!

In this five-week program, your child will Wonder, Investigate, Learn and Discover (WILD) in your city parks. This 5-week all outdoor program explores a different park each week and why it is unique. We will search for signs of spring like baby birds, budding flowers and longer days. Program includes a lot of movement, nature connection, and hands-on activities. A Corvallis Environmental Center naturalist will engage children in exploration of place, active play, development of social and emotional skills, science thinking and inspiration of wonder.

This program takes place at a different Corvallis city park each week and happens rain or shine.

Week 1: Avery Park-WILD about animals (Meet at Lion's Shelter)

Wonder about new animal life as a sign of spring. Investigate the types of baby birds we might see in the park. Learn how to use binoculars to spot nests. Discover ways to see birds at home by crafting bird feeders to take home.

Week 2: Bruce Starker Arts Park and Natural Area-WILD about wetlands (Meet at the Amphitheater)

Wonder what animals live in the Dunawi Creek wetlands. Investigate the differences between beavers and nutria. Learn about the traits of different animal species. Discover the inhabitants big and small of the water bodies within our neighborhood while we use nets and explore the wetlands.

Week 3: Bald Hill (Meet at Oak Creek Parking Lot)

Wonder what grows in spring. Investigate what wildflowers begin to bloom in this new season and how light affects where different species grow. Learn to identify flora that live in Corvallis' natural area. Discover new trails and sights as we explore Bald Hill Natural Area.

Week 4: Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (Meet at Walnut Barn)

Wonder how the weather changes throughout the year. Investigate how wind blows during spring by testing different paper planes and kite crafting methods. Learn how we can use the elements of nature we find around us to contribute to our crafts. Discover the best places to fly our kites and planes around the park.

Week 5: Chepenefa Park (Meet at Playground)

Wonder all the ways pollinators help the earth. Investigate different pollinators and their pollination methods. Learn more about different types of bees and how we can protect them. Discover how we can build houses for mason bees and other important pollinating insects to find shelter in.
