Discovering Iowa's Rich Heritage
ActivityFall 2019 (Oct - Dec)|#5959
Description
Discover Iowa's rich heritage and culture as we tour two of downtown Des Moines' most notable historical sites!
We'll start with a guided tour of the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates. This beautiful century-old building has been restored into an impressive museum that tells a story in every room...from it's history as the Des Moines public library to a celebration of agricultural and humanitarian pioneers who have dedicated their lives to fighting hunger around the world.
Next we'll enjoy a delicious lunch at Café Baratta's in East Des Moines with stunning views of the Iowa State Capitol Building and the downtown area.
After lunch we'll explore the State Historical Museum of Iowa which includes a wide range of exhibits such as: You Gotta Know the Territory, a peek at Iowa's natives and earliest settlers; Hollywood in the Heartland, showcasing the state's legacy with the silver screen; Riding through History, covering the story of bicycling in Iowa (including the bike that Indianola's own Clarence Pickard rode in the first RAGBRAI); Iowa in the Civil War, the story of what inspired 76,000 Iowans to join the fight; and Mammoth: Witness to Change, the bones of extinct ice age creatures including Mammoth bones found in downtown Des Moines! Plus many more items in a rich collection of artifacts and documents.
