Despite winning both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, Alice Walker's 1982 novel about African American women in the 1930s American South appears on the American Library Association's list of most frequently challenged books. The 1985 film, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover, also features Oprah Winfrey in her film debut.
