Description
Join us for this interactive program that links the past of Camp Douglas to the present of Bronzeville. During the Civil War, Camp Douglas served as the largest prisoner-of-war camp in the North and trained the first African-American soldiers in the Union. The fourth Camp Douglas program examines the creative ways guards and prisoners responded to the challenges they faced. Jason McInnes leads fellow Old Town School of Folk Music musicians in an open rehearsal of Win Stracke?s Songs of the Civil War, first performed live in 1965. Veteran and artist Aaron Hughes shares his work as well as projects he?s developed with Warrior Writers and the National Veterans Art Museum. The Chicago Grassroots Curriculum leads a workshop on how to use art to respond to neighborhood issues. Camp Douglas Day(s) is a series of public history programs about Chicago?s Civil War prisoner-of-war camp that seeks to connect past with present by pairing a historian with a contemporary artist or community group around a shared aspect of the camp?s story.
