Description:
The purpose of this course is to prepare the student for participation in the sport of curling. A combination of Eastern and Western techniques will be used. The student will achieve better balance, increased flexibility, and reduced stress through a combination of Tai Chi and exercises used by serious curlers.
The course will consist of four (4) ninety-minute sessions in an open carpeted room. The last two (2) hour sessIon will be taught on the curling ice. Students will be required to sign a liability waiver, wear loose comfortable clothing and flat shoes for the classroom sessions and curling gear for the final session. Sliders and brooms will be provided by the curling venue.
The specific objectives of the course include developing muscle memory in order to perform the classic curling lunge and slide, maintaining proper balance while sliding, developing core muscle strength and body awareness, and maintaining focus and concentration during the game. A long-term benefit to the student will be the ability to use the learned principles throughout their life. The Tai Chi principles of correct body posture, weight transfer and body awareness have been scientifically proven to improve health and well-being.
Each classroom session will consist of 45 minutes of Tai Chi followed by 45 minutes of curling instruction. Mr. Lionel Locke is the instructor for this course. A USCA certified Level II curling instructor since 2005, Lionel is also a staff instructor with Balanced Life Tai Chi, certified through the Tai Chi for Health Institute, and a member of the American Tai Chi and Qigong Association.
