Description: 

Youth Ice Skating Lessons are offered on Tuesday evenings for children ages 3-12. Participants are divided into groups based on age and skill level.

The Stephen C. West Ice Arena will utilize the United States Figure Skating Basic Skills Program! All skaters participating in these classes are required to be Learn to Skate USA members. There is an annual fee of $16 for the year June 1, 2021- June 1, 2022. USFS Basic Skills program is for recreational, figure and hockey skaters. Classes are held on the indoor rink, which is approximately 48 degrees, so please dress in warm, comfortable clothing. Mittens or gloves and snow pants are highly recommended for never-ever skaters as they may spend some time on the ice while learning to skate.

Lessons are 30 minutes and are followed by a 30 minute free-skate with their coaches.

TOT CLASSES:

Snowplow Sam 1

Sit and stand up with skates off ice and on ice, march in place and forward, march then glide on two feet, dip in place

Snowplow Sam 2

March followed by a long glide, dip while moving, backward wiggles, forward two-foot swizzles, rocking horse, two-foot hop in place

Snowplow Sam 3

Forward skating, forward one-foot glide, forward two-foot swizzles, backward two-foot swizzles, forward snowplow stop with skid, curves

BASIC SKILLS:

Basic 1

Sit on ice and stand up, march forward, forward two-foot glide, dip, forward swizzles, backward wiggles, snowplow stop, rocking horse, two-foot hop in place

Basic 2

Forward one-foot glides, backward two-foot glide, backward swizzles, two-foot turn from forward to backward in place, moving snowplow stop, forward alternating half swizzle pumps in a straight line

Basic 3

Forward stroking showing correct use of blade, forward half swizzle pumps on a circle, moving forward to backward two-foot turn, backwards one-foot glides, forward slalom, two-foot spin up to two revolutions

Basic 4

Forward outside and inside edge on circle, forward crossovers, forward outside three-turn from standing position, backward half swizzle pumps on a circle, backward stroking, backward snowplow stop

Basic 5

Backward outside and inside edge on a circle, backward crossovers, beginning one-foot spin up to three revolutions, hockey stop, side toe hop

Basic 6

Forward inside three-turn from a standing position, moving backward to forward two-foot turn, T-stop, bunny hop, forward spiral, forward lunge

Basic 7

Forward inside open Mohawk from a standstill position, backward outside edge to forward outside edge, ballet jump, backward crossovers to a backward outside edge, forward inside pivots

Basic 8

Moving forward outside and inside three-turn on a circle, combination move, one-foot upright spin, Waltz jump, Mazurka
