Drawing & Painting: Botanical Art/Traditions & Variations

MASKS ARE REQUIRED IN THIS CLASS FOR SPRING TERM.
Botanical Art is an art form that combines scientific accuracy with an artistic aesthetic
and sensitivity. In this class we will begin with a study in a traditional botanical art format.
Then students will select a less traditional composition to create a completed drawing or
painting in colored pencil* or watercolor.* Bring drawing/painting supplies plus a plant
stem that includes leaves, flowers, buds, and/or fruit to the first class. *Students should
be well versed in their medium of choice.

MATERIALS LIST:

General:
- kneaded eraser and white plastic eraser (Staedtler Mars)
- sighting stick, divider, or plastic grid ruler
- .5mm mechanical pencils with leads (F, HB)
- small (1”) hake brush or other soft brush
- pencil sharpener that gives a good point: Staples brand model #21835,
Staedtler hand held sharpener - 2 hole tub, Carl Angel 5 OR Mitsubishi manual sharpener
- drawing board *or foam core (about 11”x14”) *NOTE: drawings are usually 9”x12” so you do NOT need a large drawing board!
- 1/2" artist's or drafting tape


PAPER: 9"x12"
- Graphics 360 layout paper or other translucent layout paper
- tracing paper
- transfer paper

Choose From:
- Stonehenge Drawing (graphite or colored pencil)
- Strathmore series 500 Bristol Board Vellum surface (graphite, colored pencil)
- Blick Premiere Hot Press Watercolor paper (watercolor)
- Saunders Waterford Hot Press Watercolor paper 140 lb. (watercolor)

COLORED PENCILS: (NOT water soluble pencils)
CHOOSE FROM:
- ** Faber Castell Polychromos (preferred)
- Caran d’Ache Pablo
- Prismacolor Premier
- Derwent Colorsoft


IF USING WATERCOLOR:

PALETTE:
- white porcelain or plastic palette with at least 6 compartments

PAINT: **Choose from:

WINSOR NEWTON ARTISTS WATERCOLORS:
- Winsor Lemon
- Winsor Yellow Deep
- Permanent Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone Magenta or Pink
or Permanent Rose
- Scarlet Lake
- Winsor Blue (Green Shade)
- French Ultramarine Blue

OPTIONAL:
- Cerulean Blue
- Burnt Sienna
- Winsor Violet

OR

DANIEL SMITH WATERCOLORS: (Extra Fine Essentials Set - Blick)
- Hansa Yellow Light
- New Gamboge
- Quinacridone Rose
- Pyrrol Scarlet
- Phthalo Blue Green Shade
- French Ultramarine Blue

BRUSHES: **Choose from:
- Da Vinci Cosmotop Spin size 4 or 5
- Utrecht Series 228 Sablette size 4 or 5

OR

- Loew Cornell 7020 Ultra Round size 4 or 5
- any size 4 or 5 watercolor brush that has a good point
