From the basic cylinder, we will create a multitude of different shapes and sizes, and
concentrate on functional wares which will include techniques, shape, and design.
Demonstrations will cover wedging, centering, and forming shapes such as vases,
mugs, bowls and plates. As students’ progress, basic decorating and glazing
techniques will be taught as well as more advanced techniques such as attaching
multiple parts to one object, throwing lids, and surface decoration.
Prerequisite: Student must be able to throw a cylinder and be proficient in basic
ceramic skills before taking this class.

Ceramics Studio Policies
All ceramics students must follow all department policies regarding safety and health
standards including:
• Wearing a mask when in BBAC facility
• Social distancing in studio and facility
• Following sign up procedures and attendance guidelines for Open Studio times
Ceramics Open Studio Information - No Instruction
Open Studio time is available for students currently registered for a ceramics class of
12 hours or more. Dates and times are available for sign up through ceramic technician, Laura Ryan, during the first week of classes. All students will have to rotate open studio time since there is an 10-student maximum per class. Open studios are not intended to take the place of a production studio and are intended to further the education experience. Only work made at the BBAC can be glazed and fired at the BBAC.
OPEN STUDIO SIGN-UP WILL BE POSTED IN THE CERAMICS STUDIO BEGINNING THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES.
Ceramics Purchasing Clay at the BBAC
One 25 lb. bag of clay is included with your class. BBAC offers the service of
purchasing additional clay (one bag at a time) and can be purchased at the beginning
of your class time.
