Description:
Ceramics: Intermediate Handbuilding
Instructor: Sue O'Connor
Functional and sculptural forms will be explored by using a variety of molds, slabs,
textures and forms. We will focus on texture, balance, and functional use. Projects
may include teapots, pitchers, dinnerware and sculptural forms. Students will become
proficient in creating ceramic vessels with a unique surface and collecting a variety of
hand-building skills.
Prerequisite: You must have at least three classes in hand-building or be proficient with hand-building skills: coils, slabs, and pinch techniques.

Ceramics Studio Policies
Ceramics students are required to follow all department policies regarding safety and
health standards including:
• Wearing a mask is strongly recommended when in BBAC facility and in some circumstances, required.
• Following sign up procedures and attendance guidelines for open studio times
Open Studio Information - No Instruction
Open Studio time is available for students currently registered for a ceramics class of
12 hours or more. Dates and times are available for sign up through ceramic technician, Laura Ryan, during the first week of classes. All students will have to rotate open studio time since there is a 10-student maximum per class. Open studios are not intended to take the place of a production studio and are intended to further the education experience. Only work made at BBAC using clay from BBAC, can be glazed and fired at BBAC.
OPEN STUDIO SIGN-UP WILL BE POSTED IN THE CERAMICS STUDIO BEGINNING THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES.
Purchasing Clay at the BBAC
One 25 lb. bag of clay is included with your class. BBAC offers the service of
purchasing additional clay (one bag at a time) and can be purchased at the beginning
of your class time.
• Limit is three, 25 lb. bags per term
• Each 25 lb. bag of Wheat Stone is $17
• Each 25 lb. bag of Porcelain is $20

- Basic Pottery Tool Kit (sold on Amazon.com or Blick.com)
- Apron (or wear something that can get dirty)
