VIRTUAL MY CASSEROLE DISH: HANDBUILDING FOR BEGINNERS/ Hellenne Vermillion

Wednesdays from 10:30 AM - 12 PM

A great beginners’ class to learn how to work with stoneware clay making functional pieces. Students will learn to create plates, bowls, mugs, berry bowls, and more using slabs and forms. Some techniques will be applique, piercing, carving, and making handles. This class will help students get the feel for working with stoneware high fired clay and see how high fired glazes look. All pieces will be glazed in one glaze color of the student’s choice by Chastain staff. A 25lb of stoneware clay is included in the fee. You will need a wooden rolling pin, canvas or non-sticking surface, and basic clay tools. Some clay tools can be requested to be borrowed from the studio if necessary.


During the Winter 2021 Session, students will be able to drop off their greenware at Chastain during individually scheduled appointments for the first (bisque) firing. Materials are not included in the cost of these classes unless otherwise stated. Each bag of clay purchased ($27 for a 25lb bag) will allow up to 2 cubic feet of firing space. Overages will require an additional fee, $10 per cubic foot. Students who participate in these virtual classes can schedule 1, 2, or 3-hour windows for individual glazing inside the Gallery Studio. There will be an additional fee of $10 per hour for glazing. There will be a minimum of one-hour breaks between scheduled isolated glaze appointments for sanitization. Students will be required to wear masks and sanitize while at Chastain Arts Center.

If City of Atlanta reverts back to Phase I of the Mayor’s Reopening Plan, the building will be closed until we move back into Phase II.

Students will receive an email with the link to the Virtual Class between 1-3 days prior to the start of the virtual class.
