Description: Ages: 18 - Adult. Join the Ann Arbor Civic Chorus for a virtual Community Sing this summer! Each session has a specific and unique theme. Vocal Technique Class & Folksong/Art Song (1769.401): Learn about healthy vocal technique habits, including breathing techniques for better vocal tone and stamina, and apply these principles to folksong and art song. Singers of all experience levels are welcome and will be taught and challenged at their individual level; Sight-Reading & Madrigals (1769.402): We practice a variety of sight-reading techniques and apply them to classic madrigals. Singers of all experience levels are welcome and will be taught and challenged at their individual level; Voice Master Class & Musical Theatre (1769.403): We learn and sing solo musical theatre repertoire. Singers will be encouraged to perform for each other and will receive feedback on vocal technique, style and expression; Music Theory/Analysis & Bach Fugues (1769.404): We study the theory and form analysis of Bach fugues and then sing them; Vocal Improvisation & Jazz (1769.405): We learn vocal styling and improvisation, including scatting, and apply it to jazz standards. Community Sings will be held virtually through Zoom, and you will need access to Internet and a device that has a camera and microphone during the sessions. Biography: KarenTenBrink holds a Bachelor and Master degree in music education from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the University of Michigan, respectively. She currently teaches a private piano and voice studio in both Jackson and Ann Arbor and is the Assistant Conductor of the semi-professional Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor. Karen grew up in a musical family in Germany, attending a music and arts magnet school in Munich. She taught general music and directed choirs for several years in Michigan public middle and high schools. She has directed children?s, youth and adult choirs in the United States, Japan and Thailand, including as the chorus master for the Bangkok Opera in Thailand. She now regularly performs as a conductor, singer and pianist. She lives in Jackson with her husband and two children.Karen is very pleased to embark on a new musical adventure as the director of the Ann Arbor Civic Chorus and looks forward to inspiring community music making.
