Description

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CLASS REQUIRES A CASH MATERIAL FEE OF $5 PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR IN ADDITION TO THE CLASS FEE.

If the mention of tie dye makes you think of summer camp, dyeing old t-shirts with rubber bands and Kool-Aid, you?re not alone! In this class, we?ll learn some more refined techniques and use higher-grade materials to create sophisticated, colorfast projects. We?ll cover how to use fiber reactive procion dyes, basic color theory for planning your project, and folding and tying techniques to create mandala and sunburst patterns, along with time-honored favorites like the vortex spiral.

Please bring 1-4 (depending on size) white/natural-colored cotton garments to dye, and clothes/shoes you don't mind getting drips on; gloves and aprons provided. A few recycled t-shirts will be available for testing. Material fee in cash to the instructor to cover dyes and shared equipment. Fiber reactive dyes are for cellulose fibers like cotton, bamboo, linen, hemp, and rayon. The dyes won?t work predictably on wool, silk, or polyester.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING denim, canvas, sweaters or anything made of sweatshirt fleece. These fabrics take a lot of extra dye (2-3 times as much as t-shirt fabric), and longer to dye than we will have time for in class.

Laura Davis is a fourth generation Californian who has spent the past 20 years living in Los Angeles. She is a lifelong addict to all kinds of textile arts, including crochet & knit, sewing, embroidery, weaving, spinning, dyeing and botanical printing. California is a rich environment for natural dye materials, and Laura spends a great deal of time exploring and discovering, collecting, and experimenting with ways to use our natural bounty in textile arts. Laura has been teaching fiber art classes through Griffin Dyeworks in 2015 and now teaches various dye and other textile arts classes for adults, teens, and children throughout the year.
