Get Lifeguard Certified at Parks Tacoma!
Ready to take the plunge? Join one of our American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Courses and gain the skills needed to work as a professional lifeguard.
Important Information:
- Fee: $250* (Non-refundable)
- Age Requirement: Must be at least 15 years old by the final day of the course
- Prerequisites:
- Pass the swimming skills evaluation (details below)
- Complete all assigned online modules before attending in-person sessions
- Attend all scheduled class sessions — no exceptions
Swimming Skills Evaluation:
(participants must be able to successfully demonstrate these skills to participate)
Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence
- Swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination (no back or side strokes). Goggles allowed.
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs.
- Swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination (goggles allowed).
Timed Event (Must complete in 1 minute, 40 seconds)
- Swim 20 yards (face may be in or out of the water, no goggles).
- Surface dive 7–10 feet to retrieve a 10-lb object.
- Swim 20 yards back on your back, holding the object at the surface with both hands.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Important: Use a personal email address (no school or business accounts).
Once registered, you’ll receive an email with your blended learning student voucher — this grants access to required online modules. All online modules must be completed before attending in-person sessions.
