The Music Theory Lab is an in-person equivalent to the online music theory program. Students who enroll in the music theory lab will complete one level of the theory sequence over the course of the semester. The class will have a mixture of students who are completing different music theory levels. Each class begins with a group activity, which may include creative projects, performing rhythms, sight-reading music, and listening exercises.

Following the group activity, students transition to individualized lessons and assignments based on their progress in the music theory sequence. While students work independently, they are guided by an instructor and may collaborate with peers. Students must bring a laptop computer or tablet to each class meeting. Students should also bring a pair of headphones that are compatible with their device. Please note: Students should complete a placement test to determine placement in this or another theory level. After completing the test, you will receive a class recommendation and registration link from the Department Chair. For a complete description of the skills taught in each music theory level, please see the Music Theory Syllabus. For more information, please contact Evan Meier, Theory Department Chair, at (202) 686-8000 x1598 or EMeier@levinemusic.org
