Description
BLACK DIAMOND MINES REGIONAL PRESERVE -
Hard as rock, fragile as glass. In the early 20th century, the Hazel-Atlas Sand Mine was a critical link in the process to create glass. Discover the stories of the miners who removed the rock that once was an ancient seabed and is now part of your everyday life.
All participants must be age 7 or older, and parent participation is required. Hard hats are required and provided. Underground spaces may feel claustrophobic for some people. Please bring a jacket; you will be underground in the mine, where temperatures are in the mid-50's year-round. 1-hour long tours are available every Saturday and Sunday from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. This tour is not wheelchair accessible.
Arrive at least 15 minutes early, to allow enough time for parking and walking to the Greathouse Visitor Center, located ¼ mile from the parking lot. The walk from the parking lot and during the tour includes some steep and uneven terrain. Park in the upper parking lot, 1 mile past the kiosk. Once parked, continue up the hill, following signs to the Greathouse Visitor Center.
Each tour is limited to 15 total maximum participants.
Cost is $5 per person.
$5 per vehicle parking fee applies when kiosk is attended.
Registration Required.
